This Festivity, which means 'Holy Evening' has a Celtic origin. The Celts believed in a sun god and in an evil power called Samhain. Each year Samhain held the sun prisoner for some months(winter). This fact was celebrated by the druids on the last day of October, meaning the new year. On that day, the druids wore long white clothes and lit bonfires on hilltops to scare away evil spirits. The people also started fires in their homes wishing to keep the evil spirits away and wore frightening costumes. People believed that, on that night, Samhain made dead people appear in the form of black cats among others.

From Maria José Lobo - Heinemann Festival Conference Barna-99

Gradually, the Celtic celebration adopted new features from other cultures and 'travelled' from Europe to America. Today Halloween is mainly celebrated in the United States and in some parts of Britain in a way that reminds ancient times. People dress up in strange costumes: witches, ghosts, monsters, black cats, etc. and lit candles inside empty pumpkins, turnips and potatoes (Jack-O-Lanterns). They also hang a sprig of rowan or hazel on the house door to keep evil spirits away. The children knock at doors ans ask people to give them something. If they get something nice (treat), they go away happily. But if they get nothing they may play a 'trick' on those people.
